What Should I Do After Laser Tattoo Removal? Complete Aftercare Guide

If you’ve recently had a laser tattoo removal treatment, looking after your skin properly in the days following your appointment is an important part of the process.

While the laser works by breaking tattoo ink into smaller particles, your body then gradually clears those particles over the following weeks and months. Giving your skin adequate time to heal between treatments can help support the removal process and reduce the risk of unnecessary irritation.

At ERA Tattoo Removal in Noosa, we provide our clients with personalised aftercare instructions following every treatment. Here are some of the most important things to know about laser tattoo removal aftercare.

What Happens After Laser Tattoo Removal?

Immediately after laser tattoo removal, the treated area may appear red, raised or swollen. Some clients experience tenderness, warmth or temporary whitening of the skin immediately following treatment.

The reaction can vary depending on the tattoo, treatment area, ink density, skin type and the individual.

Importantly, a dramatic skin reaction does not mean the treatment has worked better. Blistering is a possible side effect of laser tattoo removal, but it is not the goal of treatment.

Tattoo fading happens gradually after your appointment as your body processes the fragmented tattoo ink.

1. Keep the Treated Area Clean

Keep the area clean and follow the aftercare instructions provided by your laser technician.

Avoid excessive touching, rubbing or friction while the skin is healing. When washing the area, be gentle and avoid scrubbing the treated skin.

Keeping the area clean is particularly important if any blistering or broken skin develops.

2. Use a Cold Compress for Swelling

Some swelling after laser tattoo removal is completely normal, particularly following an initial treatment or when treating certain areas of the body.

A wrapped cold pack or cool compress can be applied intermittently to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Never apply ice directly to the skin.

If possible, elevating the treated area can also help with swelling, particularly when treating the arms, hands, legs or feet.

3. Don’t Pick or Scratch the Area

If your skin develops blistering, crusting or scabbing following treatment, allow it to heal naturally.

Do not pick scabs or deliberately pop blisters.

Removing them prematurely can interfere with the skin’s natural healing process and may increase the risk of infection, pigmentation changes or scarring.

4. Avoid Excessive Heat and Exercise Initially

For the period recommended by your laser technician, avoid activities that cause excessive heat, sweating or friction around the treated area.

Depending on your treatment and skin response, this may include strenuous exercise, saunas, spas and very hot showers.

Your skin has just undergone a laser treatment, so giving it time to settle is important.

5. Protect the Area From the Sun

Sun protection is extremely important during laser tattoo removal.

Avoid exposing the treated tattoo to excessive UV exposure and keep the area protected from the sun while it heals.

Once the skin has healed sufficiently, use a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen on exposed areas and follow your technician’s recommendations.

Tanned or sunburnt skin can also affect when your next laser treatment can safely be performed.

6. Don’t Expect Your Tattoo to Disappear Immediately

One of the biggest misconceptions about laser tattoo removal is that the tattoo should look significantly lighter immediately after treatment.

That’s not how the process works.

The laser targets the tattoo pigment and breaks it into smaller particles. Your body’s immune and lymphatic systems then gradually process these particles.

This means tattoo fading can continue to develop for weeks after your appointment.

Some people notice visible fading after their first treatment, while others may require several sessions before the change becomes more noticeable.

7. Give Your Body Enough Time Between Sessions

More frequent laser treatments don’t necessarily mean faster tattoo removal.

Your skin needs time to heal, and your body needs time to process the fragmented tattoo pigment.

At ERA, we generally allow a minimum of 8 weeks between laser tattoo removal sessions, with longer intervals sometimes recommended depending on the tattoo, treatment area and individual response.

Allowing adequate time between treatments is an important part of a considered tattoo removal treatment plan.

Can I Shower After Laser Tattoo Removal?

Generally, you can shower following laser tattoo removal, but avoid very hot water, prolonged soaking and scrubbing the treated area.

Gently pat the area dry rather than rubbing it with a towel.

Always follow the specific aftercare advice provided following your appointment, as recommendations may differ depending on how your skin has responded.

Is Blistering Normal After Laser Tattoo Removal?

Blistering can occur, but not everybody will blister following laser tattoo removal.

Some clients experience redness and swelling without developing a single blister and can still achieve excellent tattoo fading.

A stronger reaction does not automatically mean a better result.

If blistering does occur, avoid popping or picking at the area and follow the aftercare instructions provided by your clinic.

How Long Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take to Heal?

The initial redness and swelling often settle relatively quickly, while other skin reactions may take longer to resolve.

Healing time varies between individuals and can depend on the size and location of the tattoo, treatment parameters and your individual skin response.

Even once the surface of the skin looks completely normal, however, the tattoo removal process is continuing underneath.

This is one of the reasons appropriate spacing between treatments is so important.
