Pregnancy can bring plenty of changes — and sometimes it can also make you rethink a tattoo you’ve been wanting to remove.

One question we’re occasionally asked at ERA Tattoo Removal is:

“Can I have laser tattoo removal while I’m pregnant?”

Our answer is simple: we recommend waiting until after your pregnancy before beginning or continuing laser tattoo removal.

Here’s why.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Proven to Be Unsafe During Pregnancy?

There currently isn’t enough research specifically studying laser tattoo removal during pregnancy to confidently establish its safety.

This doesn’t mean laser tattoo removal has been proven to harm an unborn baby. Rather, there simply isn’t enough evidence to say with certainty that the treatment is safe during pregnancy.

Because tattoo removal is an elective cosmetic treatment, there is no need to take an unnecessary risk when treatment can safely be postponed.

For this reason, at ERA Tattoo Removal, we do not perform laser tattoo removal during pregnancy.

Does the Laser Reach the Baby?

Tattoo-removal lasers work by delivering energy into the skin to target tattoo pigment. The laser itself is not travelling through your body to your baby.

However, that's not the only consideration.

Laser tattoo removal causes a response within the treated skin and breaks tattoo pigment into smaller particles, which your body then gradually processes over the weeks following treatment.

Because pregnancy involves significant changes throughout the body — and because there is limited research specifically investigating tattoo pigment clearance following laser treatment during pregnancy — we believe the safest approach is simply to wait.

What If I Was Having Tattoo Removal Before I Found Out I Was Pregnant?

If you’ve already been undergoing tattoo removal and then discover you're pregnant, don't panic.

Having a laser treatment before you knew you were pregnant does not automatically mean that you've caused harm.

However, once you know you're pregnant, we recommend pausing any further tattoo removal treatments for the remainder of your pregnancy.

If you have any concerns about treatment you've already received, speak with your GP, obstetrician or other healthcare provider.

Will Taking a Break Ruin My Tattoo Removal Progress?

No.

Taking a break from laser tattoo removal will not undo the progress you've already made.

Tattoo removal is already a gradual process, and we routinely leave a minimum of 8 weeks between treatments, extending this to 10–12 weeks or longer as tattoos become lighter.

Your tattoo isn't going to suddenly regain the pigment that has already faded simply because you've taken a longer break.

When you're ready to return, we can reassess the tattoo and continue your removal journey from there.

Can I Start Tattoo Removal Immediately After Pregnancy?

There’s no need to rush straight back into treatment.

Your body has been through significant changes during pregnancy and birth, so when you're ready to restart, we recommend getting in touch with us first.

We can discuss your circumstances and determine an appropriate time to recommence treatment.

If you're breastfeeding, let us know when you enquire or book so we can discuss this with you before treatment.

Why Does ERA Choose to Wait?

Our approach to laser tattoo removal has always been about achieving results without unnecessarily rushing the process.

When there isn't sufficient evidence establishing the safety of an elective treatment during pregnancy, we believe the sensible approach is to postpone it.

Your tattoo will still be there when your pregnancy is over, and there is absolutely no disadvantage to waiting.

Tattoo removal is a journey — and sometimes taking a break is simply part of that journey.
