Why Is My Tattoo Not Fading After Laser Removal?

You've started your laser tattoo removal journey, had a few treatments, and you're wondering why your tattoo doesn't seem to be fading as quickly as you'd hoped.

Sound familiar?

Firstly, don't panic! Tattoo removal is a gradual process, and slow fading doesn't necessarily mean your treatments aren't working.

Some tattoos show noticeable changes after their first session, while others take several treatments before the difference becomes obvious.

So, why might your tattoo be taking its time?

1. Your Body Does the Hard Work

One of the biggest misconceptions about laser tattoo removal is that the laser removes the ink instantly.

It doesn't!

The laser delivers extremely short pulses of energy that break tattoo ink into smaller particles. Your body's immune system then gradually processes and clears some of those particles over the following weeks and months.

This means the fading process continues long after you've left your appointment.

Laser tattoo removal is a partnership between the laser and your body. The laser targets the ink, but your body plays a major role in clearing it.

2. Some Tattoos Have More Ink Than Others

Not all tattoos are created equal.

A delicate fine-line tattoo and a heavily saturated black tattoo can respond very differently to laser treatment.

Professional tattoos often contain significant amounts of ink deposited at varying depths within the skin. Dense shading, repeated tattooing and cover-up work can all mean there's more pigment to break down.

The more ink present, the more treatments may be required to achieve noticeable fading.

This is why two tattoos of the same size can have completely different removal journeys.

3. Your Tattoo Might Be Fading More Than You Realise

When you look at your tattoo every single day, gradual changes can be surprisingly difficult to notice.

You might not see a dramatic difference in the mirror, but comparing photographs taken several months apart can tell a completely different story.

At ERA Tattoo Removal, we encourage clients to look at their progress over multiple sessions rather than judging the outcome of each individual treatment.

Tattoo removal isn't always a straight line. Some sessions produce noticeable fading, while others may appear to make very little difference.

That doesn't automatically mean progress has stopped.

4. Tattoo Colour Makes a Difference

Different tattoo pigments absorb laser wavelengths differently, which can influence how effectively they respond to treatment.

Black ink generally responds well to 1064 nm laser treatment, while colours such as green, blue and yellow can be more challenging and may require different wavelengths.

Certain pigments can also be particularly stubborn, even when the surrounding ink has faded considerably.

It's important to understand that not every laser can effectively target every tattoo colour.

At ERA Tattoo Removal, we use the Quanta Discovery Pico, which offers both picosecond and Q-switched laser technology to treat suitable tattoo pigments.

5. The Location of Your Tattoo Matters

Where your tattoo sits on your body can also influence how quickly it fades.

Areas with generally better circulation, such as the upper body, may respond differently from areas further away from the heart, including the ankles, feet and lower legs.

This is partly because your body's circulation and immune processes are involved in clearing fragmented ink particles.

So, if your ankle tattoo seems to be taking longer than your shoulder tattoo, its location could be one contributing factor.

6. You Might Need More Treatments Than You Expected

It's completely understandable to want your tattoo gone as quickly as possible.

However, laser tattoo removal usually requires patience.

At ERA Tattoo Removal, we generally advise clients that approximately 8–12 treatments may be needed for significant fading or removal, although some tattoos require fewer and others considerably more.

The number of treatments depends on factors including:

  • Ink colour and density

  • Tattoo depth and age

  • Location on the body

  • Previous tattoo or laser treatments

  • Individual skin and immune response

Complete removal isn't guaranteed, and some pigment may remain despite multiple treatments.

If you've only had two or three sessions and aren't seeing dramatic results, that doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

You're still in the early stages of the process.

7. Giving Your Skin Enough Time Between Sessions Is Important

It might seem logical that having treatments closer together would make your tattoo disappear faster.

Unfortunately, that's not how laser tattoo removal works.

Your skin needs time to recover, and your body needs time to continue processing the fragmented ink.

At ERA Tattoo Removal, we recommend a minimum of 8 weeks between treatments, often extending to 10–12 weeks or longer as removal progresses.

In some cases, giving your body more time between sessions can allow additional fading to become visible without another treatment.

More frequent laser sessions don't necessarily mean faster results.

8. Sometimes Tattoo Ink Becomes More Stubborn

As a tattoo becomes lighter, the remaining pigment can be increasingly difficult to treat.

This may be due to differences in ink depth, pigment composition, the amount of ink remaining or how effectively the available laser wavelengths interact with it.

You might notice that your tattoo faded significantly during earlier sessions but now seems to have slowed down.

This can happen, particularly in the later stages of removal.

It doesn't automatically mean that increasing the laser energy is the answer. Treatment settings need to be selected carefully to balance effectiveness with skin safety.

What If My Tattoo Hasn't Changed at All?

If you've had several treatments and genuinely can't see any fading, it's worth having your progress reviewed.

Your practitioner should assess your before-and-after photographs, the tattoo pigment, your skin's response and whether the treatment approach remains appropriate.

Some tattoos are simply more resistant than others, and certain pigments may not respond well to the available wavelengths.

A lack of visible fading doesn't always mean the treatment has failed, but it shouldn't be dismissed indefinitely either.

Patience Really Is Part of the Process

We understand how frustrating it can feel when you're ready to say goodbye to a tattoo, but your skin isn't quite keeping up with your expectations.

The important thing to remember is that laser tattoo removal is a process, not an overnight transformation.

Every tattoo is different, every body responds differently, and progress isn't always immediately visible.

Taking regular progress photographs, allowing adequate healing time and having realistic expectations can make the journey much easier.
