Can Laser Tattoo Removal Leave Scars?
Updated: Oct 12

One of the biggest concerns people have before starting tattoo removal is:
“Will laser tattoo removal leave a scar?”
When laser tattoo removal is performed correctly using appropriate equipment and treatment settings, the risk of permanent scarring is low.
However, no laser treatment can honestly be described as completely risk-free. Your skin, the tattoo itself, aftercare and how aggressively the area is treated can all influence the outcome.
Here's what you need to know.
Does Laser Tattoo Removal Cause Scarring?
Modern laser tattoo removal works by delivering energy into the tattoo pigment, breaking the ink into much smaller particles that your body can gradually process and clear.
The aim is to target the tattoo pigment while minimising unnecessary damage to the surrounding skin.
When appropriate settings are used and enough healing time is allowed between sessions, permanent scarring is uncommon.
This is also why we don't believe in rushing the tattoo removal process.
Your Tattoo May Already Have Scarring
Something many people don't realise is that the tattoo itself may already contain scar tissue.
If the tattoo was applied too deeply, heavily worked or the skin was damaged during tattooing, there may be existing scarring underneath the pigment.
While the tattoo is dark, this can sometimes be difficult to see.
As laser treatments gradually remove the ink, the underlying skin becomes more visible and existing texture or scarring may become noticeable.
This doesn't necessarily mean the laser created the scar — it may simply have been hidden underneath the tattoo.
What Does Normal Healing Look Like?
Immediately after laser tattoo removal, the skin won't necessarily look normal — and that's expected.
Temporary reactions can include:
Redness
Swelling
Tenderness
A warm or sunburn-like sensation
Whitening or “frosting” immediately after treatment
Small blisters
Temporary changes in skin colour
These reactions do not automatically mean the skin is scarring.
The skin needs time to settle and heal following each treatment.
Why Treatment Spacing Matters
At ERA Tattoo Removal, we leave a minimum of 8 weeks between laser tattoo removal sessions.
As tattoos become lighter and progress through their removal journey, we may recommend waiting 10–12 weeks or longer between treatments.
There is no benefit in continually treating skin that hasn't had enough time to recover.
Your body also continues processing fragmented tattoo pigment between appointments, so treating more frequently doesn't necessarily mean your tattoo will disappear faster.
Giving the skin adequate recovery time is an important part of reducing unnecessary complications.
What Can Increase the Risk of Scarring?
Although permanent scarring is uncommon, the risk can increase when the skin experiences excessive trauma.
Factors may include overly aggressive laser settings, treating the area too frequently, picking or scratching healing skin, removing blistered skin or scabs prematurely, infection, poor aftercare or existing scar tissue within the tattoo.
This is why tattoo removal shouldn't simply be about using the highest possible laser setting.
Stronger doesn't always mean better.
Treatment needs to be appropriate for your skin, tattoo and how you've responded to previous sessions.
Can Laser Tattoo Removal Change Skin Pigmentation?
Yes. It's important to distinguish pigment changes from scarring.
Some people can experience temporary lightening or darkening of the skin following laser treatment, known as hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation.
The risk can be influenced by skin type, tanning, treatment settings and the wavelength being used.
Pigment changes may gradually improve over time, but this can vary between individuals.
Aftercare Is Important Too
What happens after you leave the clinic matters.
Following your aftercare instructions and allowing the area to heal naturally can help reduce complications.
Avoid picking at scabs or blisters, keep the area clean and protected while it heals, and contact your clinic if you're concerned about how your skin is recovering.
Can We Guarantee You Won't Scar?
No responsible laser clinic should guarantee that there is absolutely zero possibility of scarring.
Every person's skin responds differently, and every tattoo presents differently.
What we can do is assess your tattoo and skin, use appropriate laser settings, monitor your response and allow sufficient healing time between treatments.
If we can see existing scar tissue within your tattoo, we'll also discuss this with you.
